Patches of Camp Nochaway Which served Nochaway Council (predecessor to Chehaw Council) (This page last updated on: Friday, June 01, 2007)
Nochaway (or Notchoway as spelled in the National BSA records) Council was the precursor to Chehaw Council. It was formed in the 1921 and closed in 1929. A brochure from the 1923 Camp Nochaway (of Nochaway Council) is the primary source of what is known about both Nochaway Council and Camp Nochaway. Camp Nochaway was located at Rhodes Ferry fifteen miles southwest of Bainbridge on Spring Creek (see map below). There are no known patches from Nochaway Council or Camp Nochaway. The brochure below is from the 50th anniversary newspaper printed by Southwest Georgia Council. Pages 31 and 32 contain the brochure. The copy below is a scan of a laminated, yellowed newspaper and consequently not very good. Although credit is not directly given for the ownership of the brochure, from the other parts of the newspaper it appears that it might belong to Joe Houston of Sylvester.

The actual site of Rhodes Ferry appears to have been flooded when Lake Seminole was built. But the place known as Rhodes Ferry continues to exist. Directions are as follows. Proceed southwesterly out of Bainbridge (Decatur County) on GA 253. Cross Spring Creek and go 1/4 past mile marker 8 to Rhodes Ferry Road. The 1895 map below shows ‘Rhodesville’ which is the general location of Rhodes Ferry.
Decatur County, 1895
